Sexual Assault
What is sexual assault? It is forced, manipulated or coerced sexual contact. It is a part of rape, child sexual abuse, same-sex assault, transgender sexual assault, acquaintance rape, drug-facilitated rape, harassment and marital rape.
Sex vs. power – Rape is not about uncontrollable sexual urges. It is an attack intended to inflict physical and emotional violence and humiliation on a person. The perpetrator uses sex as a weapon with the intent to assume power and control.
No limit – There is no limit as to who can be impacted by sexual assault. Women, men, children of all ages can be victimized. There is no limit as to age, race, income levels or levels of education.
According to a 1998 study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday.
Young women between the ages of 16-24 experience the highest rate of sexual assault.
Rape is the most costly crime to survivors in the United States, totaling $127 billion including medical costs, lost earnings, pain, suffering and lost quality of life.
1 in 10 women and 1 in 25 men who have experienced sexual assault missed work or school because of the abuse.
